worm|wood «WURM WUD», noun.
1. a bitter herb used in making medicine and in certain liquors, such as absinthe and some brands of vermouth. It is a woody perennial plant native to Europe.
2. any one of the genus of herbs or shrubs of the composite family to which the wormwood belongs, such as santonica, moxa, and tarragon; artemisia. Several kinds of wormwoods of the western United States are usually called sagebrush.
3. Figurative. something bitter or extremely unpleasant.
